Duloxetine is a serotonin-noradrenaline (norepinephrine) reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) used primarily to treat major depressive disorder, generalised anxiety disorder, and chronic pain conditions like diabetic neuropathy, fibromyalgia, and musculoskeletal pain. By blocking the reabsorption of serotonin and noradrenaline in the brain, duloxetine increases the levels of these neurotransmitters, improving mood and altering the way pain is perceived.

It’s commonly prescribed in doses that start low and are gradually increased to minimise side effects. Duloxetine typically takes a few weeks to show its full effects.

Apart from mood disorders and pain, it is also used to treat urinary incontinence in some cases. Common side effects include nausea, dry mouth, dizziness, and fatigue, though these often decrease over time. Due to the potential for withdrawal symptoms, stopping duloxetine should be done gradually under a doctor's supervision.
