If you don't know, there was a similar scenario during the 2014 World Cup qualifiers where Panama had almost qualified for the World Cup. On the final day of that qualifiers, Panama had to face the United States, who were sitting on top of the table with 19 points and had already secured the qualification berths (along with Costa Rica, at that time). Honduras, who were 3rd and had 14 points, were almost guaranteed a spot, regardless of the final day results (they drew 2-2 vs Jamaica). That left Panama and Mexico, who were battling for the playoff spot. Mexico knew that a win against Costa Rica is a must for playoff, or else they must hope the USMNT beat Panama. Mexico lost 1-2, while Panama unexpectedly scored a 83th-minute goal to make it 2-1. Panama knew that if they kept the scoreline until the end of the match, they will be the one that face New Zealand in the playoff. But then, the USMNT scored 2 injury-time goals and won 4-2, breaking Panama's dream in the dying moments.

In short, Panama's unexpected World Cup qualification and the United States' failures in 2018 was seen as a "reversal of fortunes" for Panama after they had barely missed out the 2014 World Cup.
