The Confessor having an insanely badass backstory, cool weapons, and one of the coolest armor sets in the game makes it easily the best starting class

Huh, now it makes sense why the volcano manor sends you to kill rileigh. the confessors hunt down those who stray from the golden order's guidance, and the volcano manor antagonizes the golden order as much as possible.
I wonder if that's why bernharl became a recusant. His brother was hunted down just because he lost the guidance of grace, and swore revenge against the golden order.
Edit. Seems like bernharl sought destined death to culminate his revenge against the golden order by releasing the rune of death. That's why we find him in farum azula.

BONUS COMMENT LORE: Crepus's Vial states that "there was a time Tarnished who had strayed from guidance feared nothing more than utter silence". The wording "there was a time" suggests that Tarnished no longer fear utter silence, or the confessors. Why is that? I think it's because Crepus, the Head Confessor, is no longer around. His crossbow and black bolts are found locked away in Roundtable Hold, perhaps suggesting that the Hold brought him to justice long ago. Furthermore, there's a confessor NPC in the game called Rileigh the Idle - the word "idle" suggesting that they are no longer active in hunting down other Tarnished.
