y'all are spending more time justifying ripping tabs up than it takes to just solder in a new battery

Makho changing a Gameboy cartridge battery like it's an F1 Red Bull pitstop. Not even time for a "Hey folks!". 😁

yet there will be people online who will spend 10 min of their life with a knife or screwdriver prying at the tabs just so they can avoid soldering.

Most people don’t own soldering irons.

The lengths people will go to, just to avoid soldering. Hell, I get it can be daunting, especially for younger hobbyists, but c'mon. I'm sure everyone knows someone who would be more than happy to do this small 30 second job for them. Especially with how expensive these pokemon games are getting recently, it hurts seeing all those botched battery fuckups winding up on ebay.

Looks like real cartridge board, but the sticker label on the shell isn’t genuine. It’s the same you’ll see on reproduction versions of Silver Version.

This is pretty much as easy as soldering gets, any cheapo iron will do the trick good enough and be monumentally more secure than whatever that original rig was supposed to be

"You can take even a dollar store soldering iron and do this."
"nah man, I just stapled mine on. I'm good."

It's obviously not hard. I think it's more likely that for most people who rarely ever need to change a game battery, they don't want to buy equipment like a soldering iron and solder just for this purpose so instead they try to make do with whatever they have on hand, like a knife and tape. As eletronics modding hobbyists, we find it hard to imagine that. But I know for example with some (non-electronics) DIY home repairs I've done a hack job rather than buy the correct but specialty tool that I think I'd only use for one repair. I think for most people, a soldering iron is like that.

I mean I get that not everyone has a soldering iron.
But yeah you don't need a expensive fancy iron or anything. There are cheap $10 irons on amazon you can get if this is the only bit of soldering you will probably ever do.
They aren't great, but they will get the job done *correctly*.

As a 23 year old who generally takes his time to do things correctly, 14 year old me would have 100% taped a battery if it meant I could play my copy of gold

i bought sapphire and ruby from a retro store and they said ''battery professionally replaced'' yea... they used the tape method to ''professionally'' replace it and actually stabbed a leg on the rom chip.....
