Day 50 of one boating tip a day!
A furling mainsail is usually not my cup of tea. Like everything, it has its pros and cons and a certain type of way to handle it—with finesse.
On a sailing boat, we have different ways to store and raise our mainsail:
1. The traditional way, where the bottom part of the sail (foot) is attached to the boom, and we only raise the top (head) of the sail.
2. The other one is just like a furling headsail, where the front (luff) part of the sail is attached to the mast, and we only pull on the back (clew) part of the sail.
A furling mainsail is very easy to open. You don’t need to do a lot—better to be into the wind or on a close haul. Just make sure the boom is parallel to the ground and pull on the outhaul while releasing the mainsail furling line with control, as we don’t want it to open up super fast.
Furling it in—keep those things I’ve said in the video in mind, and it will still find a way to get stuck at some point, but you'll manage to minimize the number of times this will happen 🥲.
To unshitshow the shitshow, usually pull from a different angle by playing with the boom or attaching a new line to the clew and pulling from a different angle on the winch.
