Nah that death was handled correctly. It's other anime that don't handle death with sincerity.
She represented something important to him. As a friend, someone who always had his back, and even in that moment was something he valued and the reason he felt like he could fight. When she died it was proof that he can't protect anyone. That's what crushed him, not because his "girl that he wasn't going to get with anyways" died.
Also why is that the first thing this guy thinks of... You should only be sad about a girl's death if you thought you were going to get with her? That's a bit weird.

Bro get the hell outta here! He was partly responsible for the slaughter of thousands, watched his mentor and friends die in front of him, and blames himself for not being strong enough to make a difference in a war that is beyond his limits. All while he is still a teenager with zero knowledge on how to stop anyone strong enough to tank a punch. He's on the slower learning curve for how to use his powers compared to people like Nobara and Fushiguro, he can't control the demon inside him, he is at the lowest points in his life at that moment.

An anime (or anything, really), could be good but still be over-rated. And his analogy about great ingredients and a bad (or just good) stew is spot on. People will look at the great individual parts (characters, music/sound, art style, theories on the plot) and think this is the next great classic, but it never pulls everything together.
A lot of times, after 5 or 10 years, a better evaluation will come out because the expectation from the hype is gone. That's why you'll see some shows rise in how good people thought they were. In the opposite way, a season (or an arc or even just an opening) can psych up an audience for a show that was actually always just going to be mid.

Is bro fr gonna sit there and act like he wouldnt cry if he had been non stop going through watching people die and keeping it all inside then proceded to watch his mentor die and his friend die within the span of maybe an hour. Like dude went through so much trauma in that one arc alone, before eating the finger he was just a regular dude and now hes thrusted into a world of death and chaos all because he wanted to stop his friends from being killed
