The plate is the maladaptive coping mechanisms that we use to cope with the discomfort.

I had to explain to other person in my house (who is NT) yesterday why I had a meltdown in reaction to her "just" printing some stuff.

The printer makes a God awful, VERY loud cranking/ratcheting sound each time it picks up a new page, and she often prints about 6 to 24 pages per session. I had an odd day of working on Saturday (I usually don't) and she printed a lot of stuff starting right after I had clocked in. The printer sits on my work desk so, in addition to the terrible sound, my whole setup was shaking. I hadn't recovered from that when she printed more stuff yesterday morning. It was very, very, very bad.

I overflowed even the plate over the weekend, and it was not good. I’m better now and came out without hurting anyone I love but wow I’m glad it rarely happens

This makes sense. I’ve been in chronic pain for 24 years. Anxiety and depression became a norm. My hearing is unusually good and sensitive and I have migraines every day. Sometimes I feel like I’m near what I feel like is a “trauma response” every day because what stimulates my pain, migraine and anxiety all intertwine, and all it takes is a super loud noise and I feel like I’m going to break. I watched The Incredibles 2 with my nephew and a semi-argument on the movie broke out and I asked him to turn it down and nearly left in a panic. 😅 I know I have mental health problems because of anxiety and depression but I don’t think I can say I’m neurotypical anymore either. The sensory overload is real and it’s all the time and if I’m very tired and I close my eyes I still see too much visual stimulation. 😖 It’s nice to know I’m not the only one classified Divergent though. We blend in as best we ca

I figured out immediately what the plate was for. I could really use a cognitive plate.

I refuse to believe that fireworks only represent that small an amount of water, even for a neurotypical person! Though allegedly there are people who actually like the super loud boomers. I doubt that too, frankly.

That's an awesome way of showing/explaining it to people. Thx never thought to show people like that while trying to verbally explain. Smart .My mom is a visual learner maybe this will help ❤❤❤ Love your videos ❤😊

Y’all should look into Spoon Theory and maybe do a video similar to this but with spoons. The spoon theory has changed the way I communicate with my neurotypical family and even my also neurodivergent husband and I use it on a daily basis to explain why certain tasks are or are not doable that day.

This is AWESOME!!! ❤ Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing such a simple and direct demonstration of cognative cost that can be so easily replicated. I strongly suspect you two DO know where you're going a lot of the time actually. 😂

I feel this way. It really doesn’t take much at all for me to be at my limit. I order food for delivery because the stress of going in public is too much. When someone talks to me for too long I feel myself starting to implode. I’m lucky if I get 1 or 2 things accomplished in a day that requires socializing and after it’s done I must nap. I am not diagnosed autistic but watching your videos makes me wonder if I could be.

Not autistic, but I've always been like that. Things I hate: crowds, train stations, fireworks, loud parties, and definitely grocery shopping. I buy things online except for things like clothes. I go during a time when the store is not busy, and I love it when it's empty. And don't get me started on touching.

I put on over the ear headphones and blast music with a predetermined play list of songs i know by heart that I know will block out all other noise. Once im in that "zone" i dont get stressed out by all other stimuli and can usually do stuff faster than neurotypicals. The problem then becomes though...when people want or need to talk to me and i have to stop listening to my music and immediately Get too stressed to continue and then im doing 5% of what a neurotypical can do. Ugh.
