Its actually rare here to find any houses with eaves like that. The style here seems to be flush on the ends with minimal overhang on the down sides. I was told it was done to maximize the spacing between homes in some neighborhoods where homes are required to be 10ft off the property line. Adding 12" to each home on each side would greatly reduce the number of homes they put on any given street if every two homes had to have a 4ft wider lot.

You can always repair it with some gable bracing or cornice, which actually looks quite nice if it's done well.
