Did you know that before Attack on Titan was officially serialized, Iseyama-sensei released a one-shot for the manga that had a very different story. In this version of Attack on Titan, Humanity lives not inside of three walls, but inside of individual cities dotting the landscape, each with their own personal walls. Besides this, the Titans in this series are very different as well. It is explained that the Titans were accidentally created 100 years prior to stop a world crisis, but that a group eventually released the Titans in hopes of destroying all of humanity. You can see some similarities to Attack on Titan, but so much is different. The main character is Murakumo, who looks similar to Mikasa, but possesses Levi’s personality. However, his Titan is definitely Eren’s. In this story though, a LOT of Titans, possibly all of them, have the ability to turn into humans and all act with intelligence. Titans in this one-shot also have a weakness, but it’s not in the nape. In this story, they have a “core” located where the heart is, and destroying that destroys the Titan. It is a little strange, but one thing I wish Iseyama had carried over were the flaming Katanas. That would have been so cool, and fit so well.

I actually love the idea of isolated cities with individual walls because I can imagine there is very little communication between the cities, so at any point you could technically be the very last city in the world, and if your city falls humanity goes extinct, and you wouldn’t even know it

You missed the best part of the story. Isayama submitted this one shot to... SHUEISHA's Shounen Jump. SJ Magazine rejected AOT and told him to serialize it as a Seinen work. But Isayama took his work to Kodansha, and the rest was history.

Instead of the flaming katanas (because odm is already a nightmare as it is), I really do like the individual cities. Sure it's substantially less feasible, but I like the idea of a plot where instead of the walls being busted through, contact with other cities began to dwindle, enforcing the idea that humanity was on the brink of extinction. It would probably give more in-world purpose to the scouts, where instead of just going out and looking around, they would be tasked with maintaining communication between cities and later investigating the disturbances.
