I don't know who came up with that idea, but to be honest I think it could actually attract a rat to come eat the cheese, and then climb inside your house and then you'll have a mouse and a rat. I told you the best way is to get snap traps. I live in a farmhouse and we get mice all the time and the best method is a snap trap.

I too had a house mouse! Tried all the spices etc , didnβt work. Found entry and exit points.
Went to dollerama and bought mouse traps. Cough it but felt super guilty about my method. I caught it but felt bad about the sticky catch surface. It worked but again felt bad. I really like your bucket removal idea.

I hope you don't attract new critters with the enticement of food!
There's a trap I use with buckets using a rotating bar (like a rolling pin) across the top of the bucket. Add food to the middle of the bar, and when the mouse tries to cross, it slips in. You can probably find some videos.
You can add food and water into the bucket if you plan on releasing them later. Usually you'll hear them squeaking away when caught, so thats when you let them loose.
