I remember seeing a really good piece of writing advice a long time ago. "Before writing a story, ask yourself, 'is this the most interesting part of my characters' lives?' If not, why aren't you writing about that?"
Somebody needs to nail that advice to the door of Gamefreak HQ like it's the Ninety-Five Theses.

Team Star exists either out of obligation or to justify the school setting. They had nothing to do with the time machine, Area Zero, the Paradox Pokemon, not even the professors. They are so disconnected from the rest of the story that Starfall Street either feels like filler or a sidequest.
Why did they even bother with the school setting? It makes even less sense in an open world game where 90% of the game is spent outside the school. They didn't try to make the school setting interesting. We can't even decorate our dorm room for crying out loud.

This is the first real time I got angry at how miniscule Pokemon's storytelling is. Since we're working with table scraps and crunch, we never feel the severity of the past Team Star had. No one that was partially responsible for causing the Team's formation is around anymore. No bullies, no teachers from that time. The previous director just came to exposition dump. It's infuriating. Do you know how much more impactful it would've been to have us see the bullying that took place. How almost it could help drive home that almost anyone can get picked on unjustly. How cool would it be if Clavell was around during that time and feels regret for putting so many people's promising educations at risk due to his and his peer's negligence. But noooo. It all happened before the game, no one's around to face consequences or tell a more interesting story. This is Pokemon, where we tell and never show because screw being interesting.

The reason why the Team Star story is written the way it is—it’s most likely because of the open world the game wanted to push.
Everyone can agree Breath of the Wild is a much more polished game, but its story was handled very similarly to how the Team Star storyline ended up being handled years later here—where all the big story events happened in the past and told to you through big exposition dumps.
And what you get to play through feels like an epilogue—you playing through a world where that’s already gone through most of its exciting developments, with characters that are mostly reminiscing on them.
The reason why this structure was chosen for both games is because you can’t really write a proper narrative that progresses chronologically if you can go anywhere in the world and play through it in any order you want.
That’s why Nemona’s/Arven’s/Penny’s stories are the way they are. Eight Gyms, Five Titans, Five Star Bases, and BotW’s four Divine Beasts.
It’s also why nothing exactly happens in the other two characters’ stories either beyond you gradually progressing through the Gyms and gradually beating every Titan with the more simply goal of gradually healing Arven’s Mabosstiff, and none of the juice happens ‘til all three stories culminate into the Area Zero climax.
Like don’t get me wrong, I agree I wish we could’ve gotten to play through Team Star’s shenanigans too, I’m just explaining why they deliberately chose to write it the way they did, and show that other games have chosen this same route to accommodate open world gameplay, so it’s not just Game Freak being Game Freak.
I think the fact that the Team Star backstory was so cool to begin with deserves at least some props, right? Along with their music and character designs, like you mentioned here.

Again I think any type of bully character to at least pretend to show them being truly outcasts for any reason that isn't basically their own doing would be nice.
Also actually show them doing anything please like Penny constantly talks about "oh god they've gone too far" when they exist outside of their own base/concerts/rally/whatever like a single time in the entire game and they don't do basically anything evil or bad inside those bases
Also are you at some point going to talk about the gen 8 DLC? There's nothing that interesting going on there but like that applies to the whole franchise so...

The funny thing is your first interaction with team star gives you the perfect reason for why they have to go.
They have become nothing more than a pyramid scheme.
The first two members you run into before you’re even in the school, harass people to join team star because they have to fill a quota.
The backstory given to them is just needlessly complicated.
I mean, they don’t even fight the bullies that the team was put together to fight as soon as the bullies saw that their victims were going to stand up to them,
They ran off.
And this somehow led to a backlash so bad that the previous principal and faculty all quit… what?
They didn’t even really do anything. They just stood there, menacingly.
And there wasn’t even a reason for their team to keep going.

Someone else said this, but team star are such a poor representation of bully victims that straight up they read as the bullies if you take their vague "they tried to mess with us" explanations for holding the monster truck rally as them punishing their victims for fighting back under a unified front.
And this isn't a hard sell either because this isn't theorycrafting, this is literally already in the bully storyline itself.
The Dark type Boss, G-whatever, has his "bullying" explained as being kicked off his position on the student council. A postion that ganefreak explicitly tells you he abused the powers of.
It's literally in the text of the game that one of team star's bosses claims that he was bullied because he broke the rules and got punished for doing that.
And if one of the team star captains was actually the bully themselves... Its not a stretch to imagine the others could have been too, especially with how vague everyone is about how they were bullied.
This was obviously unintentional, they didn't think about the story at all here, because duh, they just needed to fit the third route somewhere and the game ships in 4 days because TPC only cares about quality and workers rights if it hurts their wallet, but it really speaks to just how much Gamefreak doesn't think about their writing so often.

they should've like, blocked off areas or something or jumped you randomly or ANYTHING rather than 'yeah we'll he here when you're ready to fight us, take your time girl'. the whole arc was made pointless by the fact that they were completely harmless considering the fact that you could not only super easily overlevel and account for the type advantage, but also by the fact that again they didn't do ANYTHING to ANYONE apart from sit about after the first 5 minutes of the game.

The problem with team star is that none of the things that would have made them more compelling characters could actually be experienced within the limited character interactions we are allowed. We get the cutscenes from the entrance to the school, talk about what they are doing and what happened to them. These interactions could have easily taken place in the school in a certain order while existing in the world as the bases. Most elements in the game take place before the start of the game, like Sada/turo, nemona being a champion and the bullying of team star that forced the entire facilty of the school to be replaced by people who have little to no investment in the school. The school is the focal point of every major plot element and yet it feels so empty. We know that sada/turo went to the school and became a researcher. Most of the new staff are similarly researchers and a retired gym leader and an elite 4 member. We know that penny and nemona are at least a grade above you. Possibly arven too. Actually penny might be years ahead as you was there when the bullying happened and then was gone a year suggesting that of the 3 companions the she is the oldest. We know that clavell is aware of team star, but not sure what to do about them. I was far less invested in arven's quest to save his best friend than I was in unlocking abilities for my legendary cyclizar. It wasn't until you realized his parent was actually dead and you saw notes that they felt bad fod leaving him alone that he started to matter. Nemona was just lonely since her parents were never home and they really had no expectatations from her because her older sibling was already decided to take over the company they own. So she was abandoned by her parents like arven but in a different way. We have no info on penny's parents. Though we can see that she is isolated and alone as the members of team star were before she united them and gave them a purpose. Its a story of lonely people finding friends in unlikely places.
Its a story of tragedy, abandonment, isolation, persecution and a treasure hunt to find what really matters.

Also also most of your videos talk almost entirely about how each storyline is bad (which is true) but i feel like we need to talk about how the games are constantly divided between multiple storylines (and in the worst cases, seemingly divided between two versions of the same storyline because the writers can't make up their minds) and those storylines always either don't connect at all or connect so vaguely it doesn't matter. At the absolute most each storyline will bring you to a place where a plotpoint for a different storyline happens but outside of that they're basically completely disconnected from eachother and it makes each one much harder to care about or remember and it makes it a lot messier than it should.
You've mentioned gyms and how bad and almost entirely disconnected they are but I think this is a symptom of a bigger issue here. Also funny how gen 8 has one of the few storylines that almost get this right but i think pokemon fans aren't ready for that discussion.
