A shotgun has a massive benefit of shocking people when fired, more if they don't expect anything, Firing rapidly is a massive advantage. in a time where the automatic guns were extremely heavy.

Contrary to popular belief, the Canadians did not invent trench raiding but they did elevate the art greatly. In the months of November 1916 to March 1917, 48 raids were successfully conducted and 338 prisoners were taken. So much was their renown that In preparation for Gallipoli, the kiwis went directly to the Canadians to learn about and practice trench raiding.

Americans used full brass shells for their shotguns as paper cartridges absorbed water. Making ammunition expensive. However, the firepower and psychological advantages in close combat made shotguns perfect for raiding trenches.

The US had shotguns because of the guerilla warfare practiced by the Moro in the Philippines. Moro Warriors would allegedly take drugs before combat and US soldiers claimed that only shotguns and high-power handguns could stop them. These warriors are also why the M1911 pistol was chambered in .45 ACP

Allies: Use melee weapons because they don't require ammunition, are more reliable at close quarters and don't make loud noises that alert enemy soldiers.

Americans: DING DONG WHO ORDERED SOME DEMOCRACY?

As a Canadian, i feel like this was a skill soldiers developed as small kids trying to take over other kids snow forts without getting pelted in the face with snow/iceballs. Lots of crawling and tunnelling through snowbanks involved. Can’t confirm nor deny but it feels accurate.

Go look up the punching gauntlet. One of many deadly, brutal weapons favored by trench raiders
