They would want to do that because property taxes have a much higher effect on the wealthy than the poor whereas sales tax hits everyone more equally. I hope voters see through this - that pushing the burden from property tax to sales tax is shifting it more onto poor people.
On the flip side, if schools are dependent on sales tax vs property tax, funding should be more fair for schools in poor areas, but I’m sure the powers that be will find a way to fix that too
