Sir, that footage you saw is a 'knockdown karate' format from Kyokushin Karate. It's the same style of Karate used by George St Pierre, Bas Rutten, Giga Chikadze and etc. It focuses on in-close fighting with full contact strikes rather than distance fighting like Olympic Karate. Unlike the latter of which, you can win by KO there.

Reminds me of a mantis shrimp. If done right that is a great tool in the box. It's not necessary to hold the foot in that technique if you use the opposing muscles to do the same effect. Mix in some hip turning like it's muay Thai and you can break someone.
