It's a traditional practice in Confucian societies I think. You "adopt from the clan" if you have a choice. And you have these large sprawling clan families where the main line is the best candidate and the clan families are subservient to the main branch.
It's an interesting alternative to primogeniture. Eldest son takes on unless they're severely disabled, and even then they take the clan over with people to manage them.
Both routes allow consolidated power / and thus compounding gains.
Primogeniture (theoretically) gets rid of the chaos that comes when you haven't established your heir before stepping down or passing away. You know who the heir is from birth and thus can also focus resources and relationships around the heir specifically.
The "best heir from the options" approach ruins more lives though. You can see who is the best leader, you train more people as backups or even supports. But you have a lot of cliques and more power struggles vs focusing on continuing the clans goals or financial power. You also, theoretically, have a better chance of getting the best person for the job.
It's an interesting topic .
