Man modern metal is kind of going towards this sound. It is a solid good riff don't listen to haters, a solid simple riff is like a canvas for melody to be drawn over. My best projects usually have stupid simple rhythms but it letse be a lot more creative with melodies and multi instrumentation. The caveman groove is what gets peoples heads banging. You can always add more layers to add different more complex emotions but a simple base is the best building point.
