I like the theory that vampires like garlic, they just work to perpetuate the myth so that people would use garlic to, in essence, pre-season their food.

IMHO people knew the medicinal properties and health benefits garlic had. Vampires, being unliving, were repulsed by such a life-giving herb.

In Bram stokers Dracula, when professor vanhellsing brought garlic in the room to ward off Dracula (at the time not telling anyone why) he was bringing in the flowers, not the part we eat... which was used in many incense for purification purposes... so the food has nothing to do with it.

I imagine it to be the same reason for fragrant plants in the beak of a plague doctor mask.
Bad smells (miasma) were thought to be the source of disease for like 2000 years or more.
Sufficiently powerful "good" smells could ward off anything.

I figured that vampires couldn't stand the smell of garlic.

They're not afraid of garlic, they're seasoning you

I told my nephews the garlic thing is a myth, and when they asked why I haven't bitten them I looked grossed out and said "You're my family. You taste horrible!" ;)

Oh gohd πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ I just started testing for porphyria recently. πŸ˜‚ It sucks hard and it's painful but we do what we can to adjust, right?
I'm apparently not anemic though

Nah, no garlic needed. Even though I eat a lot of it, if I had a chance to be a vampire IRL I don't think I'd turn it down, even if I had to "sparkle"...lmao
