Israel conducted airstrikes on Khan Yunis, the main city in southern Gaza, following Hamas' threat that no Israeli hostages would be released alive unless their prisoner release demands were met. This escalation follows Hamas' October 7 attack on Israel, which resulted in 1,200 Israeli casualties and the capture of about 240 hostages. Israel's retaliatory military offensive has devastated much of Gaza, causing at least 17,997 deaths, mostly women and children, as reported by the Hamas-run health ministry. Meanwhile, rocket fire from Gaza into Israel continued, and Islamic Jihad claimed to have detonated a house harboring Israeli soldiers. As of now, 137 hostages remain in Gaza, while around 7,000 Palestinians are held in Israeli jails. The prolonged conflict has pushed Gaza's health system to the brink of collapse, with most hospitals non-functional and nearly two million people displaced.
