Fascinating. In Picard season 3, I wish they used the Star Drive section of the USS Venture. At least that would have given them phasers on the nacelles, and that would have been a nicely upgraded version of the Enterprise-D.

In fairness, the Phaser cannon in that alternate future was used on Klingon Negh'Var ships.
While we do know that Klingons upgrade their ships, they don't seem to do it to the same degree like Starfleet does.
Its possible those Klingon ships the ENT-D destroyed with the cannon were simply outdated... in which case their shields would be comparatively weak and easily penetrated.
Riker seemed to make sure the D was kept in upgraded condition.
Though I have to say that some design choices for the Galaxy X upgrade seemed a bit unnecessary.
Most of the upgrades would have been under the hood, and the external ones would have been like we saw on the USS Venture (extra phaser strips on nacelles).
I don't think the bridge module needed the extra attachments, nor did the stardrive seemingly require a third nacelle since most of the upgrades to the Warp drive would be internal, and more nacelles don't necessarily allow for faster warp speeds... they mainly project and maintain a warp field.

I like the Enterprise E and really like the Odyssey class but I wish we had gotten a version of the Galaxy Dreadnought in the Prime Timeline, at least a version with the phaser lance. I could take or leave the third nacelle and the addition torpedo launcher on the rear of the saucer section π

I would have loved a little Easter egg at the end of Season 3, where with so many senior officers and ships lost, Starfleet wanted to recommission both Riker and the D to which Geordie says "Well she's a fine ship if not a little slow and under guned - but its nothing a few small additions wouldn't fix"

The Enterprise X as I like to refer to it is what the galaxy class should have been from the start but not given the name Enterprise though.
The X puts the Defiant to shame(then again do does the Lakota).
Should have put all those wasted resources used on the Defiant into the ships line the Lakota and upgrading the Galaxy in to the galaxy X class.
Before anyone tries to say the X is an alternate timeline need I remind you that canonically from TNG there were NO survivors from Wolf at all, that means no sisko.
So the ds9 era is a different timeline as well because there are survivors from Wolf thus the X can easily be a viable option.
