IIRC there was a translation issue, the astronomer reported seeing "canal-like formations" which could be anything, but in English the word means specifically man made waterways which would be proof that there is not only water but an intelligent civilization on Mars.

I have been remembering lately my wee early childhood and beginnings of elementary school from last millennium during the late 70s and early 80s. I recall folks saying the galaxy is the universe, universe is static and eternal, and seeing canals in my textbook. Folks really held on to what they were taught.
