「青絲漸綰玉搔頭，簪就三千繁華夢」、「寒玉簪秋水，輕紗卷碧煙。」 我過古代髮飾的起源既有來自於勞動、禦寒遮羞、裝飾悅目等因素，也有來自於模仿和傳感等因素，有著廣泛的社會基礎和思維基礎。它的類別包括許多，有簪、簪花，釵、梳釵、步搖、篦、金鈿、銀鈿等，在唐代後還出現了冠，其中最為人們耳熟能詳的，可能就是發簪了。
發簪，又稱簪子、冠簪，是我國古代是用以固定頭髮或頂戴的髮飾，同時，也是具有裝飾作用的首飾，一般為單股（單臂），雙股（雙臂）的稱為釵或髮釵，形似叉。
我國古代的簪和釵，除了金屬和荊枝製作之外，還有竹、木、玉石、玳瑁、陶瓷、骨、牙、金、銀、銅等各種材質製造。髮夾出現後，簪和釵就漸漸很少被人使用了。直至近年又再流行，除了傳統的材質外，還有全枝用塑膠製造的簪釵或以塑膠為裝飾的簪釵，另外鑲上水晶或其他半寶石的簪釵亦很流行
