I have 43 lucid dreams recorded in my LD journal, and it's mostly about being aware in your waking life, i.e. not living on autopilot. The more you're conscious of what's going on around you and actually taking time to be aware of what's happening rather than just letting it breeze by you, the more that translates into the dream world.
I've had a non-lucid dream where Godzilla was attacking the city, and in the dream I thought it was just another day. You gotta curb the auto-pilot in real life to be lucid in dreams. Look into All Day Awareness, reality checks, and keep a dream journal to increase your dream recall, probably the best advice I have for LD practice. Plugging my nose and trying to breath has worked every time for me.

I started keeping a dream journal, using my IPhone journal option. I have always dreamed and a few times I have remembered the dreams for long periods of time; usually because of the strong emotions it generated. I have one that is over 12 years old, and will never forgot, it left me in a shocked state. Some make me laugh. The most intense with detail and imaginative occur after a long physically demanding day; I go into a very deep restful sleep. Also, I have noticed a couple of times my dream intermixed me into whatever story I happen to be listening as I am sleeping. I actually look forward to sleeping because I enjoy the entertainment value/release my dreams provide. A few are educational and perplexing when I find myself speaking foreign languages too!

When my daughter was young, 4-5, she would wake up sometimes with nightmares. With some practice I was able to teach her about Lucid dreaming. She turned monsters into kittens, became a butterfly and flew away, made a sun inside a dark cave, etc. It often became a giggle in the morning instead of tears in the night. There is a lot of research on the subject and techniques you can try. Pretty cool for those who can master it, and even manifest it.
