すぐに降りる場合や友達や同僚といて席が一つしか空いてない場合は座らないこと多いけど、普通に一人でしばらく乗るなら外国人の隣が空いてたら座る
だって寝たいし疲れてるから
ただし脚広げてる人達の間は狭くて休めないから座りたく無い

外人シートって大体汗とかの体臭がキツいか香水の匂いが強すぎる場合か、大声で話す、電話する、イヤホンなしで音楽聴く、大股広げてるとかのシンプルなマナー違反かどっちかなんですよね
普通に体臭、香水の匂いがキツくなくてマナー守ってれば普通に座るよ

でもおれも前にめちゃくちゃ筋肉質で腕組んであしひろげてる白人の人の隣座ろうかと思ったけど、なんか身長も高いし怖かったんや...差別するとかじゃなくて熊みたいというかもう少し腕組むのをやめて足広げるのをやめてくれたら隣に座ったかも知れないけど..

maybe if I were there I'd head for the seat and just assume the person would make space for me to sit, if the straps were in the way...
or I would just sit on them lol

Like other people are saying, it's the straps. I make sure I tuck in my backpack strap so others feel comfortable enough to take a spot near me. Sometimes I only realize it's hanging when someone gets close. But when they see I've moved it, they have a seat.

Hint: If you sit with your legs wide open, they will not sit next to you no matter what race you are. Make yourself compact and pay attention to your hygiene before you complain about "gaijin seat".

I like it when people don't sit next to me because I feel uncomfortable being squished. I never experienced this when I visited Japan (maybe because I look Chinese) but I'm not saying it doesn't happen.
To add my perspective: In my own country, I get nervous whenever I sit next to foreigners because they are usually so big, and people sometimes cast curious glances at them and by extension, the people sitting next to them.

Isn’t that a privilege thou. As an introvert, nobody’s disturbing me and giving me double space to put my stuff down and all. Maybe it’s a problem with social able people?

I'm Japanese, but sometimes I dress up as a yakuza and get on the train. In other words, I wear a suit, black sunglasses, and my hair is originally a buzz cut. Then, even on a crowded train in the morning, there will be no one around me.
