A comic by Gary Larson humorously coined the term "thagomizer" for the spiked tail of the stegosaurus. Even though it was a joke, the term was adopted by paleontologists and is now semi-formally used to describe the stegosaur's tail spikes. The name was first used professionally during a 1993 paleontology conference and has since appeared in museum displays and scientific literature. Larson, through his comic The Far Side, has also had species of insects named in his honor.
