I do agree. I know one Prof who was my good friend before he become Professor. He have to fight for funding, for working space. His fighting mode transfered into students also making them feel unnecessary pressure and stresses, while the same things can be said /done towards his staff in a good and friendly manner if the boss would not be overloaded by the system with tons of issues it's tried to solve. For this reason I assume beginber Profs (aka Assistant Profs) may be more toxic and nervous as a mentors and thus be not a good choice for empathic and sensitive persons type.

Yeap. Totally looking forward to ditching academia after I get the PhD title (which is really just for authority purposes and nothing more). Hope industry culture is better, but I've known humans enough to doubt it.

I believe that research should be a different thing than education. Being a good research doesn't mean that you are also a good teacher, or the opposite. Unis must have good and commited teachers. Research centers (even inside universities) can take up the research. That way more people could be absorbed, too. Rather than asking from an academic to teach, produce papers, get grants, and do admin stuff - where the first thing of these one can "sacrifice" is being a good teacher..

Literally just started my PhD in Petroleum and my department is going against the toxic bullshit and my advisor is great.

Grants are ruining the purpose and value of research as well as ethics re ownership. PhD candidates are sittibg ducks.

I agreeā¦ as u go āhigherā or move into more competitive universities, the reward only comes when u put in money to the univ via grantsā¦ not anymore about how much scholarship you put into your work. :(
