this was actually pretty interesting because I connected the behavior of the straw to the behavior of electricity: having the second second hole in the straw is similar to shorting the voltage source (the suction from the mouth) to ground (the air), and the series load (the water) had substantially more resistance and therefore got far too little current to do any noticeable work, but if the "voltage" could be sufficiently increased (by probably several hundred fold in this case), then a meaningful current could still flow through the load to actually perform work, although I'm not so sure that such a current could actually be produces by any mechanism or machine
I'm aware of the actual mechanism but it seemed like an interesting analogy
