One of the most striking features of The Fall of the Damned is its sense of relentless motion. The damned souls seem to be spiraling out of control, drawn into the depths of Hell by unseen forces. Rubens creates this effect through his use of diagonals, with the figures positioned at various angles that suggest a downward spiral. The viewer’s eye is drawn from the top, where the damned first appear, down into the chaotic mass of bodies being swallowed by darkness.
Among the damned are vengeful angels and demonic figures. These beings help drive the souls downward, pulling them with terrifying strength. The demons are nightmarish, often depicted with horns, sharp claws, and other bestial features. In contrast, the angels, while still fierce, retain a sense of divine justice, their presence a reminder of God’s ultimate power over human destiny.
