Living in NYC and lived in Buffalo, too. I've noticed a lot of white men do this... They usually run warm, and i dont understand their secret. They are gate keeping how they stay warm with shorts and a t shirt in the winter from the rest of us!!!

Average winter temperatures in North America can be significantly colder than the temperate winters in Asia (esp. Japan) so some of it is genetics and the other is due to climate acclimation based on the region you live in. I’m North American but I work with many people who come from South America, and they almost always require more layers to feel warm in the winters here but have a much easier time during the summer months (I get warm easily and they don’t feel anything). It’s one of the awesome things about human adaptation!

This is common with a lot of guys from North America. Especially where I'm at in the midwest. It's common to wear shorts and a t-shirt until it drops below 40° (4.5°C). It's a sort of macho thing, but we're also just more used to the cold weather. He is cold, he's just not showing it.

As a US citizen, a LARGE population of men/boys wear shorts in every weather condition. Most of us don't know why but people just do it sometimes.

They're from Minnesota. There is always that one guy. It will be raining negative degree weather and he has board shorts and a t-shirt on. It might be an American thing. There's always that one guy who is just misplaced in the middle of winter.

Some of them are from northern states like Wisconsin or Michigan where there's a lot of snow. Or maybe from Canada. It's just a white people thing idk. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Looking at weather averages for Tokyo, it's saying an average low of 7°C. Which is like, a cool fall day, average low for December where I'm from is -14°C.
So if I got off the plane from my city and landed in Tokyo, that would be a temperature difference 21°. So ya, imma be wearin shorts.

I dunno about that guy, but when you live in a tropical country with daily temperatures reaching 38-40°C, Japan's winter is a literal breath of fresh air.

Yeah... It's a common thing here in the USA. And the people either have a higher tolerance against the cold(good blood flow) or they're ignorant to their body. They gonna get sick!

If they're from somewhere like Canada, it probably doesn't get cold at all to them in Japan

I studied in Kazan close to Siberia. I was shocked to see some Chinese students wear shorts, t-shirt and an unzipped light jacket in -20C

In Japan right now for the first time and I feel like I get some weird looks from Japanese since I'm walking around in a T-Shirt. I do have a scarf though. Maybe it's that combo that makes me look extra weird.
