Whiskey plank.. tiny on that. But your right thats what that is! Last one i did was 22' long made out of 3" thick teak. Was 10" wide at its midship section. Dont drink whiskey.. but after slapping that thing in after a day of trimming, had plenty of beers! Wooden boat building is a dieing trade. We need more people to learn it.

I worked with a gentleman named Dale Hood from Wimberley, Texas years ago. I remember him telling me that wood working is easy because you have straight edges to work with.
He told me that boat builders are usually insane because there are no straight edges on any boat...

Know what you mean brother. Building your own Kayak is so satisfying, especially the Whiskey Plank. Once it's in, everything else is EASY!!

That'll be fun on a long portage. Canvas on a wood frame is lighter and cheaper. Fibreglass is stronger, lighter and doesn't rot but it costs more, though still less than a couple of hundredweight of timber.

I have great success with painter tape as clamps. Got the idea from Nick Schade building his Petrel Play.

Scribe the line from underneath, using the open hole, leave the line when you cut, sand it down flush.. takes one time for the proper fit

I wonder if a rub joint would do in that situation. If your joints are really that well fit, it might. Would save you all the clamping as well!

A word to the Wise, my Brother of the Sawdust.... use a tab of clear packaging tape on each clamp tab and that'll keep from finishing that bottle of sedative until AFTER you finish the whole boat.... been there, done that, got the T Shirt, Hat, couples a Woodworker's Anonymous Coins and a frequent flyer certificate from my therapist ( she was recommended by a fellow member of WWA, and OHHH SO WORTH IT....!) ππ
