the difficulty you had cutting the elderberry is not because the blade was dull or the weight of the "machete" but because of trying to cut straight across the grain, if you hold the branch up and cut at a shallower angle you would have more than enough power to cut most of the way through that branch...even rotating the branch 45degrees and cutting across it on top of the log would give you a significant gain in efficiency to your cutting (I have been a hedgelayer and user of billhooks for the last 40 years or so)
