I have learned about this in school. Its called induced magnetism where an unmagnetized magnetic material like steel can be magnestized if it touches a magnet. It becomes a magnet itself. The North pole of the magnet would always point towards North pole of Earth(South pole of Earth's magnetic field) as unlike poles attract. This is also why magnets are used in the compass. Objects like needle would be much better for this survival situation as it is pretty thin, narrow and has less weight. Also, materials like iron nails cannot work as they would instantly lose their magnetism once taken away from the Iphone's magnet
