This third book of the bible takes place in the few weeks after the tabernacle has been built and the Israelites depart from Mount Sinai. It is largely composed of Godβs speeches to Moses concerning rituals to atone for their sins, and how to behave around the tabernacle. Leviticus is less about belief, and more about rituals, and legal and moral practices. It instructs the people to avoid impurity and sin whenever possible, and how to obtain forgiveness so that God can continue to live in the presence of the people within the Tabernacle. including the practice of scapegoating. Leviticus contains the Holiness code, its abominations and prohibitions, with the punishment for blasphemy being death. Godβs code of conduct ends with the Israelites needing to choose between law and prosperity, or sin and suffering, and expulsion from the Promised Land.
