Boeing's plan to turn the B-1B Lancer into a supersonic gunship may have been just a bit too crazy to become real... but it sure could have been cool.

Turn it into the mother of all missile trucks to augment the F-35 and its constellation of drone wingmen.

They should reconfigure them as “Missile Trucks” to support the F22 & F35.
The idea was floated a while back but the idea never took hold.

I think you meant to say “High Stall Speed” as a negative for it. “Low stall speed” would be a positive for a close air support gunship.

At a late 80's airshow (Hillsboro OR) I watched a Lancer stand on one wingtip and circle the small airport. It reminded me of a AC-130 gunship at the time, keeping constant munitions focused on one point on the ground.... but I think the engine noise would have done even more damage.
That grey swan is LOUD!

Well, there goes my idea about buying a surplus B-1 and flying it to Oshkosh '24. 😂

I was at airshow in Melbourne and you could look up into the Bombay of the B1. I looked at every nut in and mechanism. Really super cool and it still looks like it’s from the future.

Back in the 90s McDonald Douglas had plans for an AC-17 gunship based on the C-17 that basically would have had the armament of 3 AC-130s with 3 150mm auto loading howitzers, 3 30mm Bushnasters and 4 20mm Phoenix cannons that was promised to obliterate everything in 3 square miles per pass. It would have been glorious!

The Eurofighter is thought to cost 100.000€ an hour. 170.000€/h for such a monster would not be too bad in this regard...

that would make the ultimate private jet.

I personally feel like the B-1 should be modified to be an emergency standoff weapon. Using it's high speeds, and potential payloads to intercept aircraft carriers/ships that have moved to places they shouldn't be. It's payload would be hypersonic missiles. I know there are other systems that can do this, but the best way to ensure security is to have multiple layers of systems. This would simply be one more layer of protection.

Alex:

Thank you so very much for your objective and informative broadcasts, my friend. They are greatly anticipated, as well as enjoyed.

Perhaps you could devote a portion of an episode to delve into how the operational costs (hourly, etc.) are defined regarding the various military aircraft that our Republic employs. Are the costs for readiness alone, maintenance and/or flight related, or are they simply an average of various factors? Would really like to have a more detailed outline of the factors which determine the various costs.

Thanks again for your outstanding episodes. Great to see that you are feeling better, my friend. Have a fantastic week. 👍🏻🇺🇸🦅

I can't imagine the forces applied to the airframe from low-down, underslung, high-caliber guns would be particularly helpful for longevity...

Seems pretty obvious it would be too expensive for that role… at least that was my first thought

I understand why the A-10 is being retired, although I think ultimately they'll have to come up with another CAS type plane (outside of the Sky Warden), but the B-1 too. I bet it will return to service in the next 2-5 years if we go to war.
