What I observed is that only the mermaids are mentioned with such whiteness, he never uses "white" to describe a human in his tale; so it's rather making a difference and people shouldn't say that she's white only because it's a Danish tale. There's also one part, where the prince mistakes the mermaids for seafoam on the water. So, that's probably the connection! Mermaids do turn also in seafoam after their deaths. I suppose that Andersen meant such a pale white like Snow White, as white as chalk, but not a normal white skin tone, to capture the ethereal otherworldness, and it's not used as a direct description, always in connection with "pretty" or "tiny" (such like pretty, white, tiny feet."). Whatever, Disney made so many, many changes to the tale and the live action is actually a bit closer to the original, and people are freaking out on the exact skin tone. They didn't understand it at all....
