I don’t think that’s actually correct. The eye perceives depth based on contrast, so if you keep the ceiling a light colour but have dark walls, the size of the room will be emphasised and make the room look smaller. But if it’s all light or all dark, there isn’t the contrast so it blends more and looks more appropriately sized.

You’re so right. When you showed the ceilings dark I got anxiety 😅 lol. I had no idea this could have an effect on us. I was going to paint my ceiling darker lol but now after seeing this, I think it would make me anxious and feel boxed in. Thank you for teaching us these little gems. I’m learning

Yeah this conflicts with other advice I heard, that you SHOULD paint the ceiling the same color so the eye can’t determine breaks/corners and the room feels larger

If you don’t want the ceiling dark pick a color on the same chip that’s two shades lighter for the ceiling

Thank you, this is eye opening. I have a long narrow room that I'd like to look LESS long and narrow, any suggestions?

What if you paint the top of the room a dark color

I don't agree at all. This is an outdated opinion. And it's just not true. It depends largely on the decor and furniture. Mostly the furniture, though. You can absolutely get away w a dark aesthetic, including painting the ceiling and walls a dark color, as long as you follow these basic design "rules" aka guidelines. These state that as long as you have light colored furniture, decor, etc., you can absolutely get away with the all black walls and ceiling, or whatever dark color you prefer. ✌️
