Socrates was hugely pessimistic about the whole business of Democracy.

We are used to thinking very highly of democracy but in book Six of the Republic, Socrates explains the flaws of democracy.

Imagine you are going out on a journey by airplane.
Who would you want to fly your plane? The most famous cherished old politician or A Pilot with thousands of hours of experience in flying the plane.

Well of course the Pilot.

Then why do we keep thinking

that any eighteen year old person should be fit to decide by vote.
Who should be a ruler of a country?
Socrates’s point is that voting in an election should be a skill,
not a random intuition or a celebrity contest.

And like any skill, it needs to be first taught systematically to people.
Letting the citizen vote without an education is as irresponsible as putting them in charge
of deciding who will fly the plane based on a democratic vote.
