In my practice I have come across parents who said “how dare you label my child Autistic? I know he is not that, his doctor doesn’t think he is Autistic”
By getting an Autism diagnosis we are not technically labelling the child to be something! We are actually getting to know about the child even more ! What works for the child the best? How can we best accommodate the child’s needs? How can we advocate about the child’s requirements in school / public places? And so many things!
I have heard and read plenty of Autistic adults who were diagnosed late, that They wished they got the diagnosis earlier and only after their diagnosis their whole life made sense ! That they felt belonged and not alone for the first time!
Getting the Diagnosis and Educating ourselves with Neurodivergent affirming skills and strategies is the first step to Acceptance!
