Mayapur is a holy city located in West Bengal, India. It is situated on the banks of the Ganges River, approximately 130 kilometers north of Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta). Mayapur holds great significance for followers of the Gaudiya Vaishnavism tradition, particularly those associated with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).
Mayapur is considered the birthplace of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who is revered as an incarnation of Lord Krishna and an influential figure in the Gaudiya Vaishnavism tradition. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu appeared in Mayapur in the late 15th century and propagated the practice of sankirtan, congregational chanting of the holy names of God, specifically the Hare Krishna mantra.
The main attraction in Mayapur is the ISKCON temple complex known as the "Temple of the Vedic Planetarium" (TOVP). This grand temple, still under construction, aims to showcase the Vedic teachings and spiritual philosophy of ISKCON.
