Russians intercepting western unmanned aircraft has been in the news lately. But stuff like this has been happening for years. Military history is filled with encounters between NATO and the Russians and the Soviets
Let's go back to 2004 for some Cold War ocean archaeology and a Taiwanese assassination attempt.
On March 19, 2004, the wreckage of a Swedish DC-3 aircraft was lifted from the bottom of the ocean after having been shot down 52 years earlier by a Soviet MiG. In what was known as the Catalina affair, this incident was a tense moment of the early Cold War. The wreckage is now on display in a museum in Sweden.
On the same day workers completed that salvage work, President Chen Shui-bian of Taiwan was shot in an assassination attempt, just the day before the country's presidential election. The president survived, but the incident sent shock and unease through Taiwan.
