Card Destruction's role in this format is as a mill finisher in a deck that sticks one of its dozen 2000 DEF monsters after exhausting the small handful of removal and removing the small handful of bigger than 2000 ATK monsters. There's no other mill support - you do a lot of passing. I'm doubtful it was the optimal way to play with cards like raigeki and monster reborn at 3, but post-banlist, it's a very important change for this reason (it's not used to deep draw - it's a -1 and there's just not enough power cards in the pool to justify it).
People will tell you the Exodia pieces were limited for flavor reasons, and like yeah that had to be part of it (they're at one in the video game Forbidden Memories, which predates paper play), but the change to the design space should not be ignored. The next set that comes out is Metal Raiders, featuring some new ways to draw cards and critically Sangan and Witch of the Black Forest, and over night Exodia becomes INCREDIBLY potent. Maybe I'm giving them too much credit, but I think they specifically limited the Exodia pieces so they could print more searchers and card draw.

Its crazy to think that the power 5 spell cards all have been power crept except pot of greed. Looking back, there are far more broken spells that we can consider the power spells of old school yugioh. Painful choice is the first that comes to mind.

Untrue, in early days of the game the tier -1 deck was Exodia which had 3 copies of every piece, 3 Pot of Greed, 3 Graceful Charity, 3 Upstart, 3 Painful Choice, 3 Sangan, 3 Witch, 3 Last Will, and 3 Backup Soldier.
Whoever won the coin flip won on the spot being able to cycle and draw into Exodia right away.

I've been playing the meta since just before that first banlist.
Exodia FTK was the best deck by far. Kids walking into locals back then were always shocked that the TCG was nothing like the anime. Almost all games ending on the 1st turn.

Until CED it was just the Limited/For bidden list. The banlist came later.

I really dont think exodia was limited for flavor there was many draw cards otw like witch of the black forest coming 1 month after this list and qnd those cards would of made exodia the main deck....so im pretty sure it was forward thinking and seeing exodia was already a power house in the ocg with these cards.
