Hiccups? Relax Your Diaphragm with These Tips

Hiccups are often caused by improper contraction and relaxation of the diaphragm. To address this, focus on neck exercises and breathing techniques to relax and reset the diaphragm.

Neck Exercises: Gentle neck stretches can stimulate the phrenic nerve and help regulate diaphragm movement.
Breathing Exercises: Slow, deep breaths calm the diaphragm. Inhale for 5 seconds, then exhale slowly.

These exercises can help "shock" the system back into proper function, resolving hiccups more effectively.

Interesting. When I have hiccups that won't go away, I pile up some pillows and lay on them, facing up. I position myself so the pile is mid-back, I put my arms over my head, hang my head back, and breathe deep to open my rib cage. I never realized the diaphragm was involved, but that makes sense.
