wrap it in glass wool and then wrap nichrome wire around that, heat it with a variac.

When I’ve tried stuff like this I use ceramic wool that’s meant for wood stoves. You can get rolls of it just like fiberglass. I hate it because it’s dusty and gets little particles everywhere, but when you need it you do what you gotta do. For low temp stuff I don’t like fiberglass for similar reasons, I prefer high temp ropes.
