Two things: first the Hulk has an innate desire to do good and protect the innocent even in his rage and second while the Hulk may not recall the knowledge and education of Dr. Banner he is more intelligent than his appearance would suggest, in this case seeing an opportunity to use his environment to win the fight without risking harm to the child. Very on point characterization of the comic book character.

I had the great pleasure to meet Mr Ferrigno in KC a couple of years ago. He is a very warm and kind person. I told him that in my eyes his is the best Hulk. He gave me a hug.
