What’s frustrating is sometimes it is just up ahead. A couple months ago I took my wife off a trail as a short cut to our camp because she was getting tired. The trail would create a circle with our camp except there was some private land in the way, so it had a dead end. You could imagine us 80% around the loop and we’d either cut through some brush or head all the way back. But after a while of expecting to see the camp and not, we cut out losses and headed in a direction where we’d know we’d pick up the trail again, which ultimately was longer and rougher than if we’d just used the trail in the first place.
And once at camp, I poked around and found the spot where we turned back was which about 300 feet from where we could have seen our tent if we stuck with it. A crappy day all because I let stress and a mild panic make the decision

Take a compass, signalling mirror and topical basics. But with today's technology there is no reason to be in danger. Take a gps and keep it turned off.
Only turn it on every hour or so to confirm your decision and direction.
Take a bright flashlight for signalling (look into LEP flashlights)
Take a personal epirb/distress beacon, and take a radio with a decent range. Keep the radio off.
Know the wilderness radio protocol (radio silence 5mins at the top of the hour, every 3 hours from 7am to 7pm). This is an opportunity for weak signals to be heard. Broadcast emergency calls in this window. Make your epirb battery last longer by only turning it on once an hour for 5 minutes. This will make a 24hr battery last up to 10 days and tells rescuers that you are still alive and not to give up. Find water and close by high ground. Stay put.

What was purposely getting lost like for you?
Here is my couch critic thoughts and what I think my mindset would have been if I was making this episode:
Alright, I'm making a show and need to get lost let's enjoy this! That way looks cool, let's go check it out. I'm going to go check out that cool stump. Etc.
