In our previous video that demonstrated the benefits of pre-filling the oil filter, many people asked how to pre-fill the filter if it is vertically or horizontally mounted. Here's a quick hack that allows you to easily pre-fill the filter and prime the oil system before the engine fires up.

Here's the link to the previous video on pre-filling the oil filter:

I remember trying this on my old Buick LeSabre.

Nearly redlined it and I had a heart attack lmao

I have a horizontal oil filter on my Duramax diesel pickup. I pre-fill the oil filter with the required 15W40 and it sucks the oil into the fibers and then I top it off again until it pools and partially fills the filter and then I angle the filter as I install it and usually don't spill a drop, but I do have a pan under it in case it drips. Prefilled is about 3-4 seconds before the oil pressure rises and 7-9 seconds with a dry filter. I use Shell Rotella T6 full synthetic changed at 4k-5k because the motor runs smoother with this oil than the other oils I have tried, especially during winter. This is an expensive motor and I want to maximize it's life. It is also sensitive to fuel quality so I also use Hot Shot's Secret EDT at every fill up to clean the injectors and lubricate the CP4 fuel pump.

The part at the end, where he said MAKE SURE THIS IS OK FOR YOUR CAR, is absolutely crucial

If it's Upside down or side ways I typically Pour oil into the Filter and saturate the filter membrane... Soo the Oil it self does not have to Force it self for the Soak in period.. I dont know if it makes sense but I do it..

Lots of haters here who apparently don't know the author of this video. I prefill every time because it doesn't hurt to do it, doesn't take any real time to do it, and can only possibly help to do it. This has been debated a long time ago on Bob Is the Oil Guy and dozens of other places but that's the consensus. Don't want to do it - then don't!

And as a bonus, holding down both pedals takes a really nice screen shot.

I have several Toyotas that have side mounted filters. I just fill them up anyway and spin them on quickly. Very little oil is lost as the filter element soaks up a lot of the oil! Try it, it works really well!

Love this trick. Looked up all of my cars and I will be doing this from now on. Sooo much easier than trying to pre lube filter and spin it on sideways. Brilliant. I hate the sound of the engine when the oil is changed and the oil has to fill the filter first. clatter clatter clatter.

This is genius, I knew about clear flood mode, but never thought of using it like this!!!

If your car doesn't have this feature, pull the fuse for the fuel pump, crank until the low oil pressure light goes out (pausing periodically to give the starter a break if it's taking a while) and put the fuse back in.

For those of you who don't know,,this is Lake Speed Jr,,,who is one of the most knowledgeable race motor guys in this country...He's been the head of nascar engine programs for years and knows TONS about engine oiling...Lake is brilliant...You can learn something from him..

Being a Ford guy, I'm used to oil filters which are mounted horizontally, and I've found that just two or three pours to the top are enough for a quiet startup and normally raising oil pressure gauge needle. And none will spill out when spinning the filter onto the engine.
But now you've got me wondering if a standard filter can hold the two or three pours if turned upside down. I'll bet they can hold enough to yield a quiet startup. Next time I change my oil, I'm going to do three pours into the filter, and then turn it upside down, held over a funnel setting in the oil fill. When it stops draining, I'll put it on and see if the engine is quiet and the oil light goes out quickly - next car due is a Corolla...
I mean whenever I've tried to drain an oil filter, I've had to turn it over, top over bottom, to get more oil out, so I'll bet again that they can hold enough to keep the oil pump primed.

In case anyone was wondering, Toyota's generally dont have clear flood mode... but thankfully they have the filters mounted the correct way up or side ways.

Evidently not many of you have ever heard an engine rattle on a dry start, especially with one of the larger filters. I believe that's why the manufacturers have gone to those little dinky filters, so it doesn't take as long for them to fill and get oil pressure. Heavy duty engines have large oil filters and are usually always prefilled.

Isn’t is typically recommended not to crank a new engine until it builds oil pressure because the cylinder walls won’t be lubricated sufficiently until the engine reaches higher rpm? Would that also apply in this case or no because it’s a much shorter time?

Been doing that since 1991! My 91 Lumina and 91 Bonneville had it.

It set the AFR to 80:1 for clear flood mode. It was determined early on that no fuel wasn’t good. Can’t recall why. Probably in one of my old Delco books.
