I have a horizontal oil filter on my Duramax diesel pickup. I pre-fill the oil filter with the required 15W40 and it sucks the oil into the fibers and then I top it off again until it pools and partially fills the filter and then I angle the filter as I install it and usually don't spill a drop, but I do have a pan under it in case it drips. Prefilled is about 3-4 seconds before the oil pressure rises and 7-9 seconds with a dry filter. I use Shell Rotella T6 full synthetic changed at 4k-5k because the motor runs smoother with this oil than the other oils I have tried, especially during winter. This is an expensive motor and I want to maximize it's life. It is also sensitive to fuel quality so I also use Hot Shot's Secret EDT at every fill up to clean the injectors and lubricate the CP4 fuel pump.

Lots of haters here who apparently don't know the author of this video. I prefill every time because it doesn't hurt to do it, doesn't take any real time to do it, and can only possibly help to do it. This has been debated a long time ago on Bob Is the Oil Guy and dozens of other places but that's the consensus. Don't want to do it - then don't!

Being a Ford guy, I'm used to oil filters which are mounted horizontally, and I've found that just two or three pours to the top are enough for a quiet startup and normally raising oil pressure gauge needle. And none will spill out when spinning the filter onto the engine.
But now you've got me wondering if a standard filter can hold the two or three pours if turned upside down. I'll bet they can hold enough to yield a quiet startup. Next time I change my oil, I'm going to do three pours into the filter, and then turn it upside down, held over a funnel setting in the oil fill. When it stops draining, I'll put it on and see if the engine is quiet and the oil light goes out quickly - next car due is a Corolla...
I mean whenever I've tried to drain an oil filter, I've had to turn it over, top over bottom, to get more oil out, so I'll bet again that they can hold enough to keep the oil pump primed.

Evidently not many of you have ever heard an engine rattle on a dry start, especially with one of the larger filters. I believe that's why the manufacturers have gone to those little dinky filters, so it doesn't take as long for them to fill and get oil pressure. Heavy duty engines have large oil filters and are usually always prefilled.

I remember trying this on my old Buick LeSabre.
Nearly redlined it and I had a heart attack lmao
