Widening works only in contrast, you need something in the centre to make the spreading more noticeable. (This also works for depth, something in the foreground to align along when listening to distant sounds.)

And this is why checking the mix in mono regularly is almost mandatory. What component level begins to disappear in mono and why. Unless it's an effect of some kind that sounds impressive when widened, (rotary speaker, flange, ping-pong delay etc.?),. I'm with Warren on this one.

on some stuff, like more sparse or "ambient" music, would you consider keeping bass below 100Hz down the middle, then place a widening effect like the Boss Chorus to the L/R sides? (if you wanted a wide bass sound)

I have a request: could you please explain when and how you use the different polar patterns on a Multi pattern condenser mic.
I have a few tube mics. Almost always use them is cardioid. Got some pair’s of FET multi pattern mics too. Once I’ve used a set as a Blumlin pair, but I tend to use the active ribbons for that
Anyway, it would make a good video

I like to put everything dead-center, through a perfectly flat eq, pegged in the red. Everything. And everything in the key of C, holding only the C note the whole time. Look, the contract says ‘a 45 minute recording.’ Nothing says it ever has to succeed.

I believe that for Michael Jackson they played the keys back out thru speakers and recorded the room. I don’t know if that’s trying to achieve a similar thing.

Personally, I find that is not the way I like to widen things.
Why? Why don't you like that? What's wrong with widening that way? You don't want people following your advice because you're you, you want them following your advice because it's justified. Not explaining why you do something encourages cargo cult behavior.
Widening by flipping phase is bad because the signal will disappear when summed to mono, but the video should have said that. It's not experts consuming videos like these.

My favorite analogy for widening is this, "think about the elements you widen as earrings on someone's face. It's an accessory that sparkles, but not the main event"
