Why the moon has meteor craters😥 #universe #moon #asteroid #meteor #craters
The Moon has meteor craters because it lacks a substantial atmosphere to protect its surface from meteoroids, asteroids, and comets. Here’s why these craters form and remain visible over time:

1. No Atmosphere: Earth’s atmosphere burns up most incoming meteoroids before they reach the ground, creating "shooting stars." The Moon, however, has a very thin exosphere, so incoming space rocks hit the surface directly, creating craters.

2. Direct Impact: When meteoroids strike the Moon, they hit with immense force due to their high speeds, creating deep and often wide craters. Some of these impacts even form rays—patterns of ejected material that spread out from the impact site.

3. Lack of Weathering: Earth’s craters are gradually eroded by wind, rain, and tectonic activity. The Moon has no such processes, so its craters remain almost unchanged for millions, even billions, of years.

4. History of Impacts: The Moon has been impacted by meteoroids and asteroids for billions of years, especially during the period known as the Late Heavy Bombardment around 4 billion years ago, which created many of its largest craters.

These craters give us clues about the history of the solar system, as many remain intact and provide information about the Moon’s surface and past.

Earth also has numerous craters hidden beneath the crust - which proves at one point it also had no atmosphere
