This reminded me of my pact of the blade warlock - instead of delaying spells by a level with Fighter 1, I went for Variant Feat Human to get Moderately Armoured and went straight warlock. Fisher background provided in Ghosts of Saltmarsh, Fathomless Patron from Tasha's, Pact of the Blade at 3rd, Thirsting Blade at 5th. Took Hex and Lightning Lure as central spells, and leant towards lightning, thunder, and cold damage as themes. If you're fighting one big thing you can Hex it on your first turn then summon your Tentacle of the Deeps on your second turn to double-proc Hex's damage, but you can't attack with the Tentacle on turns you put your Hex on a new target.
This could also work with any race if your DM used the homebrew rule of "Give all characters a Feat at 1st level!" that I've seen a few people mention

I actually started with 7 levels of oathbreaker paladin as that gives you control undead for extra flavor and aura of hate to buff any of your undead thralls that you make with create undead or summon undead.

I'm running a variant of this in a curse of Strahd Game. Instead I focused on Charisma with it. Went the same path for warlock, but instead I went paladin and went oath of conquest so that along with a lot of the same build here you get the benifit of the aura where you reduce their speed to zero to keep the focus on you as well as doing consistent dps auto damage every time you spook'em

I am playing something very similar! I went Fallen Aasimar for the backstory but the Dragonborn for access to Dragon Fear feat is really tempting, specially with the new Dragonborn!
AoE concentration-free-non-magical fear that costs only one attack on a half feat. Ooof.

Counter point: just magic jar a avatar of tiamat. As long as your class/subclass can get magic jar ( wizard or bard) you can pull it off any way you want. You could be a glamour bard if you felt like it lolš

You know how I deal with Devilās Sight? Blindness. You might see in darkness, but if your enemies have shrouded their lair in blinding light, you canāt do shit without the blind fighting style.

I would add another level of fighter to pick up Echo Knight and have your echo be like a dracolich dragonborn version of yourself.
