鳴門海峽的潮流和意大利的墨西拿海峽,加拿大的西摩海峽,被稱為世界三大潮流,鳴門海峽大潮時流速最快可達到時速20公里,也是日本流速最快的潮流。
鳴門漩渦發生於德島縣鳴門市和兵庫縣淡路島之間的鳴門海峽,是漲退潮時,海水經過瀨戶內海和紀伊水道所形成的水位差,以及海底地形複雜的原因,潮水在海峽間快速流動時產生的自然現象. 春秋季的大潮時節漩流最大時,產生的漩渦直徑可達20m,因此,鳴門漩渦在規模上被認為世界第一,每天潮流最快的時間帶是最容易產生漩渦的時候,海水沒有產生流動的時候不能看到漩渦,為了您更好的觀賞漩渦,請參照下面的潮汐時刻表。
