I used a spare guitar pick which I cut to shape and slid into the gap and it worked for me.

Lay something like 2 popsicle sticks underneath to make a flat, even surface. Then snug up thr set screw and remove the sticks.

These spacers would also increase the diameter of the shaft so that bolt on knobs would also remain horizontally even when turning them. Great find.

I always just aligned the set screw with the "split" in the shaft. It's won't crush in that direction.
